Karl R. Zurn, M.E.E., Founder
Med Associates’ Founder and Chairman of the Board, Karl Zurn, established the company in Pennsylvania in 1971. Under Karl’s leadership and vision Med Associates has grown from a small company specializing in the inspection of hospital equipment to one of the world’s leading manufacturers of research equipment for the fields of behavioral psychology, pharmacology, and neuroscience. Karl received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University. Karl and his wife Jane have three daughters, Bridget, Brooks, and Mary Dove, all of whom are involved in the family businesses.
Jane T. Zurn, B.S.
Jane T. Zurn has a BS in Business Administration and handles administrative functions for Florida Research Instruments.
As President of Med Associates, Bridget Zurn Garibay oversees all of the company’s day to day operations. Bridget has continued Med Associates’ commitment to quality and value for the customer while promoting the growth of Med Associates nationally and around the world. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Bridget currently holds BSCSIS, MSCS, and MBA degrees.
Valdemar Garibay, MBA, MSM
Mr. Garibay has an MBA in Accounting and Human Resources. His studies include Management, Marketing Management, and Management Information Systems. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Management. Mr. Garibay’s long-term goal is to obtain a Doctorate in Business Administration with a concentration in Industrial & Organizational Psychology. His research and professional interests include Organizational Behavior, Organizational Development & Psychology, Conflict Resolution, Organizational Communication, Training & Development, Effective Team Building Management, Human Resources strategies, Operations Management, Strategic Management, Team Meeting Management, Financial Analysis and Strategy, and Inventory Management. Mr. Garibay is a Human Resources and Finance Consultant for Med Associates, Inc. Since becoming involved with Med Associates, he has improved communication channels with personnel, spearheaded Training & Development courses for Managers, and developed Financial, Human Resources and Strategic initiatives. He believes strongly in the importance of the team members that make up the organization, so that they will in turn focus their efforts to provide excellent customer service by manufacturing a quality product in a timely fashion. Mr. Garibay has worked for Med Associates for the last 2 years. He is a member of several professional organizations, which include Society for Human Resource Management, American Management Association, and American Society For Training & Development.
Brooks Zurn, B.S., M.S.E.E., Part-time engineer
J. Brooks Zurn has her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with a Biomedical Engineering option and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. She is a PhD Candidate in Electrical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University as well as a Research and Development Engineer for Florida Research Instruments, Inc.
Lunal Khuon, Ph. D.
Dr. Lunal Khuon is the Founder and Chief Technology Officer for Technology of Life, LLC, an Assistant Professor at Villanova University in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania in the Electrical and Systems Engineering Department. At Villanova University, as the Director of Villanova Biomedical Electronics Laboratory, he heads multidisciplinary research efforts to explore devices, circuits, and systems to create technology for biomedical applications and as the Chair for the Microelectronics and VLSI graduate program, he oversees the development and sustainability for graduate studies in integrated circuit (IC) design. Dr. Khuon had previously held design and system positions at Texas Instruments, Motorola, Hughes, and IBM and faculty positions as an Assistant Professor at Delaware State University and an adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. His interests are in integrated circuit design, embedded systems, and biomedical engineering. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT.
Technology of Life, LLC develops advanced electronic sensor technologies and systems and also provides design consultation in electronics, integrated circuit design, and mobile system development for biomedical and life sciences.
Dr. Dworkin Ph.D.
Dr. Dworkin received his undergraduate training in psychology at the University of Maryland and earned his PhD in psychology from the University of Florida. Dr. Dworkin completed post-doctoral training in neuroscience at the LSU Medical Center and has held tenured positions at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport in psychiatry and pharmacology and the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Pharmacology and Physiology. He is currently a Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology, Western Illinois University.
Dr. Dworkin has established international recognition for his research on the neuropsychopharmacology of abused substances. He has received both private and NIH funding and has published extensively in several areas including behavior analysis, behavior pharmacology and the neuroscience of addiction. Dr. Dworkin is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and a member of ASPET, CPDD, the Society for Neuroscience and ABA International. He has reviewed manuscripts for the major journals in the field and served on NIH and NIDA study sections.
Gerald M. Herrera, Ph.D.
Dr. Herrera has a Ph.D. in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. His research interests include smooth muscle excitation-contraction coupling, cardiovascular function, physiology of the lower urinary tract, gastrointestinal physiology, as well as learning and memory. Dr. Herrera is the Vice President of Research and Development at Med Associates, and is President of the affiliated company, Catamount Research and Development. Since becoming involved with Med Associates, he has developed a strong in-house research and development program that is rooted in both engineering and the basic sciences. He believes strongly in the importance of maintaining close ties between the development efforts within our company and the current needs of researchers. In addition, Dr. Herrera holds an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Vermont, where he is active in research collaborations and is a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
Dr. Herrera has been involved in the biomedical research industry for 18 years, the last 9 of which he has been at Med Associates. He is a member of several scientific societies, including Society for Neuroscience (9 yrs), American Physiological Society (15 yrs), American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (9 yrs), Behavioral Pharmacology Society (8 yrs), American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (8 yrs), Microcirculatory Society (4 yrs), and Molecular and Cellular Cognition Society (4 yrs).
Dr. Stephen Anagnostaras Ph.D
Dr. Stephen Anagnostaras is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neurosciences. He obtained his PhD in Psychology in Dr. Michael Fanselow’s laboratory of at the University of California, Los Angeles, studying the neural basis of Pavlovian fear conditioning. After completing his graduate studies, Dr. Anagnostaras went on to train as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Professor Alcino Silva at UCLA. He is a well-respected young scientist and already has several high-impact publications in the field. He has taught undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in the Neurosciences, as well as serving as Course Organizer for the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Summer Course on Mouse Behavioral Analysis.
Dr. Anagnostaras’ research is to combine the molecular-genetic, systems, and cognitive-behavioral levels to understand how the brain produces behavior and cognition. A major emphasis in this endeavor is bridging systems and molecular approaches using hippocampus-dependent learning, in particular, learning about context. The hippocampal-neocortical memory system offers an excellent opportunity in which the molecular and cognitive levels may be first plainly joined. Long-term objectives of Dr. Anagnostaras’ research are to advance our understandings of the mechanisms of memory, cognition, and drug addiction.
Martin Poppe has a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT, a Master’s degree from Stanford University and did Doctoral studies from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He provides Technical Audit Services, System Analysis and Design Services to the electronics industry. We have worked on a broad range of systems, and have in-depth experience in the areas of Signal Processing, Data Transmission, Navigation, Communication and Wireless Systems. Starting with customer generated product, system and cost goals, he can provide appropriate technologies, develop a design approach, select components, and create a prototype system. He works independently or with your engineering staff. Throughout the design process, provides a complete transfer of both the final design and the underlying concepts to assure your understanding of the product. He has developed numerous “Mixed Signal” systems, and can assist in determining the right balance between analog and digital solutions, and in selecting between custom and programmable system elements.
